TEFL Certificate

If you don’t have a TEFL certificate then I strongly suggest that you get one before you apply for an online position.  Employers usually require this and it will also prepare you for the job. In addition, it also shows your potential employer that you are serious about teaching.  A face-to-face TEFL course is always best but if you don’t have the funds or time to get one then the next best thing is an online TEFL course.  Make sure you go through a reputable company and don’t do any TEFL course under 120-hours.  I suggest going through myTEFL.  They have a very good name in the industry and have been around for a long time.

myTEFL. and its parent company, Footprints Language Education Ltd. (FLE) are institutional members of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL), the largest and most comprehensive TEFL organization in the world. Their courses are recognized and moderated by the Online TESOL and TEFL Standards Agency (OTTSA), an independent third-party standards board that is dedicated to increasing teacher training standards.

Teaching Experience

Teaching experience is always valued by potential employers and they often require 1 or 2 years of teaching experience.  Many starting out in the world of online teaching obviously don’t have teaching experience.  Don’t let this put you off from applying to those online teaching jobs anyway.  Here’s the thing, you may have teaching experience but you don’t know it.  Have you helped out with kids or adults in a teaching situation at any point in your life?  Maybe you were a Sunday school teacher or helped some kids with arts and crafts?  Have you babysat by any chance?  These are all things you can add to your resume.

You need to sit down and really dig deep and craft your resume to reflect your teaching ability.  If you really don’t have any teaching experience then I suggest rounding up some neighbourhood kids or adults that don’t speak English very well and do a few mock classes with them.  Don’t lie on your resume either, this is not a good idea.  So to sum up, rewrite your resume to reflect your teaching ability.  Create some teaching opportunity for yourself and put this on your resume.  It’s okay if you have limited experience, most schools do provide training.

Typical Online Students

The money lies with kids, especially in China.  When applying for well-paying jobs online you will most likely be teaching kids between the ages of 5 – 12.  Parents in China are willing to invest in their children’s education especially teaching them to speak English.  So learning to teach children will be a good skill to have.  Practice using TPR (Total Physical Response) in your lessons. Get some simple props like hand puppets, kids love this.
